5 minutes with Delilah Cosmetics founder Rupert Kingston
In the first of a series of interviews we are going to be posting on the Lisa Loves blog, we asked Delilah Cosmetics founder Rupert Kingston about his journey to creating this fabulous brand which we love and stock in the clinic.
What made you get into the beauty industry?
I came from a painting drawing background I was inspired by theatrical makeup very early on, for a GCSE art project I wanted to do some body painting, so I took a trip up to London to visit Screen face. Walking into that little shop in Notting Hill was just inspiring, I bought some water based body paint and a bruise wheel and from then on persued a career in makeup! I trained at the London College of Fashion; it was really one of the only make up courses in Europe back in the early 90s. It was notoriously difficult to get onto the course, but they really liked applicants who had a strong art portfolio. I had spent the last couple of years making alginate face casts of my friends, and as a teenager, I had worked in a hairdressing salon, so I think that all stood me in good stead.
Best beauty memory?
It has to be picking up a CEW award for delilah™ as best new brand!. To be voted for by over 1000 top professionals in the industry was just amazing. Over the years I have watched some of the best brands in the world pick up that award. I will never forget going up with Hannah and Juliet to accept the little statue and making a quick speech in front of all my peers.
Favourite beauty trends?
I have and always will be a a lover of clean, fresh, glowing skin. I just love it when spring comes around and we are creating light fresh luminous bases. Having said that I am so happy that women are wearing colour again, in particular, brighter lipsticks. We spent a lot of time in the 90’s just using nudes and browns. It is so great to see someone confidently wearing a great statement lip colour
What or who inspires you?
I am inspired by brands that combine great design with good craftsmanship; I have to say that Christopher Bailey Creative Director for Burberry has done an amazing job to re-invent the brand, totally inspiring. I am and of course will always be inspired by some of my Make up heroes, Val Garland, Mary Greenwell and the amazing Lisa Eldridge
A product you can’t be without?
Difficult to choose, I love the matt bronzers, they have a beautiful velvet finish to them, and the compacts are just gorgeous. But I am really loving our cream concealer Farewell. It has such great coverage but feels smooth and nourishing under the eye; it is quickly becoming our hero product.
If you are looking to try out some of the awesome makeup in the Delilah range which Rupert and his team have created, why not pop into the clinic for a session with our experts. On Wednesday 28th June we are running a makeup day with the Delilah team by appointment only.
